Abstract

1. How serious is the problem of genetic defects in pure-bred dogs and what factors contribute to it? 2. How can genetic defects be controlled? 3. What should be the roles of various agencies? So asks Dr. Donald F. Patterson in the following introduction to the workshop on Genetic Defects in Pure-Bred Dogs held last January. With over 150 different genetic defects identified in pure-bred dogs, it is clear that scientists, breeders, and breed organizations must work together for the future of all breeds. The American Kennel Club, sponsor of the Workshop, has taken the first step in developing initial guidelines by bringing together a distinguished panel of veterinarians and geneticists. The following articles, beginning with Dr. Patterson's introduction on the next page, present a discussion of the problems facing you, the pure-bred dog fancier.
