Abstract

Except for the systematic use of line and breed crossing, and perhaps selection on future producting ability of individuals, little has been done to capitalize on nonadditive gene action in animal breeding programs. Applications of techniques such as embryo transfer and zygote splitting result in the creation of many more nonadditive genetic relationships between individuals than found in conventionally bred populations. This may provide opportunities to evaluate and "select" for nonadditive and perhaps extranuclear genetic value. Also, if nonadditive effects are important, they must be accounted for to obtain accurate predictors of additive effects.
