Abstract
KEY POINTS There is growing evidence that clear genetic links exist between the phenotypic characteristics of dogs and adverse drug reactions The fields of pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics are rapidly expanding the promise of the clinical application of genetic data to help prevent adverse events, predict drug behavior, and discover new drug targets for study Among the most widely studied genetic variances observed in dogs is the multi-drug resistance (MDR) gene deletion mutation resulting in altered p-glycoprotein expression and altered drug behavior in Collies and related breeds The future of pharmacogenetics and its clinical applicability will have a lasting impact on the clinical decisions we make in the future
