Abstract
Dogs are domesticated animals with the greatest genetic diversity (more than 350 identified breeds). Breeds differ from each other in morphological traits, such as size and behavioral characteristics, according to standards defined by breeders. They may also have different physiological attributes. However, the principal mechanisms of genetic effect remain unknown. This article summarizes current knowledge on the influence of genes on renal function and the principal genetic canine kidney diseases.
