Abstract

Quantitative traits are those attributes of an individual which can be objectively measured. In the dog, examples are weight and height at various ages, temperament, and quality of the hip joints. These physically observed attributes are known biologically as the phenotype of the animal in contrast to the genotype contained in each indlvidual's chromosomes. Unlike the phenotype, the genotype for quantitative traits cannot be directly measured.
