Abstract

From its own breeding colony, The Seeing Eye produces a large percentage of all the animals it trains as dog guides. Both the German Shepherd and Labrador Retriever breeds are maintained in the present breeding colony, but Labrador Retrievers are a relatively recent addition. Many details surround the breeding program for these two breeds, most which have never been fully documented for the The Seeing Eye. This is especially true with respect to many aspects of genetics and database management. Before delving into these details, though, a brief historical review will help put the breeding program in perspective.
