Abstract
Estimated breeding values are a statistical assessment of the relative worth of individual dogs as replacement breeders. As such, they provide a mechanism for comparing litters of young puppies, even before any measurements have been made on individual members of the litter. Estimated breeding values thus facilitate identifying superior litters at an early age. Once these superior litters have been identified, individuals can be much more careful scrutinized to identify those best few that should become replacement breeders. Techniques for calculating estimated breeding values are well known among animal breeders working with domestic livestock. The Seeing Eye currently uses this technology to improve the accuracy of breeder selection decisions. This technology has been integrated into The Seeing Eye's information system, and it is an integral part of the breeder selection process. Over seven generations of selection, genetic improvement has been obtained in the ability of dogs to be trained for work as guides for blind people.
